About Edward Spaight

Edward is running for Judge of the Fifth Judicial Circuit, which covers Citrus, Hernando, Lake, Marion, and Sumter Counties.  The seat is coming open as a result of the retirement of Circuit Court Judge Patricia Thomas, who has served the people of Citrus County and the Fifth Judicial Circuit with distinction and honor for over twenty-five years.

Edward is a native of Hyde Park, New York and graduated from Siena College in 1992. 

Following his graduation from Siena, Edward served as a legislative aide to New York State Senator Stephen M. Saland, focusing on the policy issues of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse, Crime and Corrections, Persons with Disabilities, Local Government, Mental Health, Social Services, and Veterans’ Affairs.

Edward met his future bride, Veronica, a fellow Siena College alumnus while both were on staff with the Senate.  They were married in 1996.

Edward then attended Western New England College School of Law in Springfield, Massachusetts.  While he was in law school, Edward worked full-time as a researcher with the New York State Department of Labor and traveled over ninety miles each way several nights each week to attend school.

Edward was an editor of the Western New England Law Review and graduated Magna Cum Laude.  He then served as a Judicial Law Clerk to three judges of the Maine Superior Court.

Edward then accepted a position with the Vafiades, Brountas and Kominsky firm in Bangor, Maine.  While with VBK, Edward practiced corporate, civil and family law.  His practice took him before judges throughout the State of Maine, and he had the opportunity to argue before the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston.  He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Penobscot County Bar Association and served as Treasurer and then Vice-Chairman of the Family Law Section of the Maine State Bar Association.  He was honored by the Maine Volunteer Lawyers project for his outstanding pro bono contributions.

Edward was also the Chairman of the Planning Board for the City of Brewer, Maine.

In 2009, Edward and his family moved to Citrus County to be closer to family.  Edward has served since that time as an Assistant Public Defender in Inverness, Florida.  His current caseload includes all levels of felony cases, including First Degree Murder and crimes punishable by life imprisonment.  Edward is also responsible for the Juvenile Docket.  He has been the Chief Assistant Public Defender for Citrus County since September 2015.

Edward has lectured to attorneys and judges on issues including family law and juvenile justice issues and was a professor of Business Law at Husson College.

He served as President of the Citrus County Bar Association, was a Fellow in the Florida Bar Association Wm. Reece Smith, Jr. Leadership Academy, and is an active member at Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church in Lecanto.

Edward lives in Inverness with his beautiful wife and two wonderful daughters.
